Describe a situation of public interest in which critical and/or creative thought could have been used for a better outcome. Describe why it is important to think critically and creatively in similar situations.
A situation that definitely could’ve used better critical thinking is the crime spree in Ferguson after the Brown case. I may be crossing dangerous waters with this topic, but it is a situation that could teach us for future similar instances. “For the black community of Ferguson, the killing of Michael Brown was the last straw in a long train of abuses that they have suffered daily at the hands of the local police.” (The Editorial Board, 2014). It is our knowledge that allows us to make rational decisions about life and where life is going to take us. No one is alike and we all have different opinions in most matters of life so that is what makes each of us unique in our own way.
Identify three hindrances to the critical thinking process. Determine methods for overcoming these hindrances. Identify a time in which you experienced a hindrance in critical thinking. Describe a method you could use to overcome the hindrances.
Hindrances in critical thinking can pose a roadblock to many situations if they are not dealt with in a proper manner. Below are three hindrances to the critical thinking process. Before a method to overcoming a hindrance towards critical thinking can be developed we must first understand where these hindrances derive from. Us as individuals at times can be a self-centered thinker, self-serving bias, and be caught up with some wishful thinking. The easiest method to overcome these hindrances is someone who knows themselves, their limitations, and beliefs. Understanding that you are not better than the person standing next to you is also a method that should be taken under consideration.
1. Egocentrism (self-centered thinking).
2. Self-serving bias (having the tendency to overrate yourself).
3. Wishful thinking (believing something is true and not for any good reason, just
because they wish it was true).
There was a time in my career when I thought I was better than everyone, never took the advice of others and believed I was above everyone else. It wasn’t until later in my career when I realized that most everyone that tried to lend me a hand or provide me with advice was just trying to help. My thought process was entirely wrong and it should have never been just about me but about the team that I was on or leading that should have mattered most.
