Critical and creative thinking is crucial in regard to making good decisions. Good thinkers are proficient in respect to attaining reasonable conclusions founded on conscientious assessments of fact-based evidence. Individuals may act irrational at times as well as make wrong choices; however, irrational thinking may illicit a reasoning mechanism in respect to a number of individuals that expose hidden cognitive abilities. What does critical and creative thinking imply? Critical and creative thinkers have the necessary cognitive abilities and skills, but they also have the right attitude, motivation, self-confidence, good habits, creativity, and values. Characteristics of critical thought include recognizing complexities, curiosity, seeking the truth, clear and logical communication, intellectual empathy, analysis of vital questions, taking into account unconventional answers, integrity, deduction, and intellectual courage that allows for thinking outside the box (Critical Thinking Traits & Characteristics, 2014).

Creative thought is closely related to critical thought in that it encompasses examining things in regard to a fresh viewpoint in respect to approaching a problem with a number of solutions that avoid oversimplification. Creative thought differs from critical thought in that it allows for lateral thinking by embracing unconventional ideas and thoughts in an unusual or innovative way, and may include brainstorming.

Critical and creative thinking are considered higher levels of thought because they involve complex judgmental skills such as logic, creativeness, reflectiveness, problem solving, new ideas, and metacognitive thinking (Higher Order of Thinking, 2010). Successful efforts of these components bring about explanations, decisions, and performances that are well-founded within the perspective of existing comprehension and proficiency that stimulate the continuous growth of scholarly competence. Regardless of the point that the two modes of intellect typically derive from opposing sides of the brain, they both necessitate thinking at a higher cognitive degree; however, lower levels of thought such as application, understanding, and knowledge do not (Elder, 2008).
