Creon vs. Creon

In Oedipus the King, Sophocles, the author, describes the journey of a man by the name of Oedipus to doom himself and those around him by trying to avoid fate. In Antigone, another work of Sophocles, one’s search of power and ruthlessness allows impudence to destroy those close to him. In both of these ancient and Greek works, Creon, one of the main characters in both of these stories, turns from Oedipus’ advisor who claims to have no desire for kingship to an impudent ruler who governs with a stubborn blindness similar to Oedipus’. ”)(Sophocles 76). But Creon was wise in his decisions by informing the inhabitants of Thebes of his generosity and hospitality as opposed to revealing his impudence and even his dislike for Oedipus.
Aside from situational irony, Sophocles also presents verbal irony that is used to compare and contrast Creon in both Oedipus the King and Antigone. In Oedipus the King, Creon argues with Oedipus that he does not want to rule and would therefore has no incentive to overthrow Oedipus, as it says, “Who would choose uneasy dreams to don a crown when all the kingly sway can be enjoyed without? I could not covet kingship for itself…” (Sophocles 33). By saying this and later showing that he is eager to rule Thebes, Sophocles creates verbal irony. Creon says the opposite of what is meant because he later corrects himself through his eagerness for power.
In Antigone, Sophocles illustrates Creon’s strive for power and the stubborn blindness similar to that of Oedipus’ by which he governs through situational irony. Creon becomes Oedipus because he blinds himself (not realistically),...
