Michael irked at the silence overpowering us as the icy breeze lingered in the air attacking our pale untouched skin. Sitting so close yet feeling somewhat withdrawn as his hand gripped onto the wooden hand rail. The horn of the train becoming more aggressive as it sped like lightening, racing towards us with our hearts rapidly, beating impatiently, for the awkward silence to end.
Michael, who recently accepted a once in a lifetime job offer in Australia, against my wishes had a face full of emotion and contemplation. However, this whole situation was not at all new to me, a time when I was just a 6 year old, when my dad had walked out on me or at least that’s how I felt at the time. He was conscripted to join the army the army and leave me and my mother. At the time of his departure, I could not comprehend why he went. One feeling I felt, was that of abandonment. He would write to us regularly, telling me how much he loved me, but I could not understand why he left. My emotions were bottled up inside, I never did express them to my mother, still feeling as if my father had a choice to stay and chose not to. After the third year, I did not have a slight ounce of curiosity to even see what my father had to say in his letters. But then, it stopped! No message for years! Until roughly around five years after he left, a stranger knocked on my door to which my mother answered. It was a gentleman with a letter. The letter was from a soldier named Jack Stevens and inside it explained that this Jack Stevens was a member of my father’s subdivision and he had emphasised very much greatly what a great soldier my father was, as my mother and I had read on, it explained that my father was killed on duty.
