Most of the Christian world accepted without question the creation account in the book of Genesis for nearly 1900 years. Charles Darwin and others changed that with the theory of evolution. For many people today evolution is the only valid account of the origin of living things. “Nothing in Biology Makes Sense Except in the light of Evolution” Dobzhansky 1973. In comparing both the history of Science with that of Creationism, Science have a firmer foundation on which to support its claims.

Another factor was natural theology, which states that every feature of nature was made by God to teach us something. This made God responsible for the good and bad seen in nature. Thinking people turned away from the concept of a loving God that would make a repulsive parasite. The first coherent theories in subjects like geology, paleontology and biological change developed during this general rebellion against religion
Some scientist believed that the biblical flood was a reality that caused geologic deposits. Others believed the flood was the latest in series of multiple creations and catastrophes and which was recorded in Genesis. James Hutton wrote Theory of the Earth which said there was a complete uniformitarian explanation of geology with millions of years in earth history. He also said systems could not be studied for lack of data. Hutton apparently believed that God created the systems. Charles Lyell, another Scientist, wrote the Principles of Geology and further developed Hutton's ideas. His book was more readable than Hutton’s and thus was widely influential. This book was very important to the rise of evolutionary thought, because without uniformitarian geology and its long span of time, the general theory of evolution could not have been viable. Christians must admit that it was not wrong for Darwin and others to ask hard questions. The bible did not say that animals never changed or the earth is the center of the universe.
