Corporate Social Responsibility and Ethics

Ethics is sometimes described as a body of standards or human conduct that governs the behavior of individuals and groups. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is the way a company manage the business processes to produce and overall positive impact on society. The three levels of this CSR are economic, legal and ethical. A company needs to be more than economically and legally responsible, it must include ethics and these ethics must be above the bare minimum legal requirements. The people live in poverty and people leave the country at an alarming rate. Scotland Yard actually arrested many government officials for corruption and money laundering between 2007 and 2009. Much of this was because of corruption in the oil rich Delta State. The former president of Malawi was arrested for pocketing 12 Million dollars donated to the country by foreign governments and business. (African Business, 2009) The key to stopping the corruption in Nigeria is public relations.
Public relations are based on ethics and responsibilities, it is the way management and the whole business is perceived by the public. (Newsom, Turk, & Kruckeberg, 2004) In the case of PUR Packets as long as it’s environmentally safe and offers a person a healthy life through clean water, there will be no negative public relations. The issue is keeping the government from being corrupt and interfering with the sales and distribution of the product. We would need to have international advocacy groups be involved to keep the government more socially responsible. The Nigerian government is working on a bill on corporate social responsibility. This bill will provide standards, integration of social responsibility and international trade issues. It will establish a supervisory entity that will mandate operations and companies to spend 3.5 percent of their profit on CSR. (Yosuf, 2007) They will also keep a close eye on how much of the profit goes to the government.
