Most healthcare organizations are setup for the primary purpose to care for people of a community. This creed is meant to be executed at the highest level possible. Though it is evitable that business in healthcare suggests profit is an indicator of the growth of an organization but it isn’t the primary purpose of a hospital or health care facility. Consumers of healthcare aren’t receiving satisfaction from the care they receive based on the amount they paid for it, they are more interested in the quality of care and how such care is delivered. Type of care or service our organization focus on: My chosen organization is a tertiary hospital system and focus on acute care for patients. The mission of University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is to improve the health, health care and well-being of Arkansans and of others in the region, nation and the world by educating current and future health professionals and the public; providing high quality, innovative health care and also providing specialty expertise not routinely available in community settings; and advancing knowledge in areas of human health and disease and translating and accelerating discoveries into health improvements.
The QI Goals of the organization: The Quality Improvement goal of the organization is patient-centered care improvement process, focusing on enhancing patient experience and patient feedback process. This goal is premised on the notion that patients themselves are central to evaluating the care they receive and must be included in the process of improving on such care.
Role of consumers—patient, family, and friends—in organization’s QI process: The consumers – patient, family, and friends are the drivers of the organization’s QI process. For UAMS, it is important the consumers participate in Quality Improvement as they assess and obtain feedback about the services and care they receive. An active program to ensure that feedback is brought back to the management staff of the hospital allows for immediate assessment of what needs to be changed, reworked or discontinued.
External quality indicators available to consumers regarding the organization: Some of the external quality indicators available to consumers include electronic mail feedback, patient’s family and friends are also external indicators available to consumers. Other indicators are utilization review processes, and reports of neglect and abuse.
a) The consumer’s family and friends are often the best indicator of how well they believe the organization is performing. Since patients themselves may not have the opportunity to experience dynamic of care settings, they would rely on their family and friends to assess the quality of care delivered.
b) Utilization review becomes a key indicator because other consumers maybe in need of similar services and would reach out to assess the results of how care is consumed before making their choice.
