According to Masters and Albright (2002) conflict exists at the moment that one party feels disagreement. At that moment the conflict is neither constructive (positive) nor destructive (negative), it is best looked at as neutral. It is what happens subsequently, how the parties choose to behave once they realize that there is a conflict, which determines whether the conflict manifests positively or negatively. As human beings interact in organizations, differing values and situations create tension. According to Deutsch (1973), conflict exists whenever incompatible activities occur. Conflict is thereby viewed as a situation in which two or more individuals operating within a unit appear to be incompatible. Some experts believe that unresolved conflict represents the largest reducible cost in many businesses, yet the financial and human costs of conflict in the workplace are in most Organizations not considered a variable worth measuring and pro-actively managed.
It is obvious that conflict is an unavoidable reality of living. While one recognize this, it important that procedures should be put in place either to reduce or manage it. Huseman (1977) view conflict management as distinguishing between useful conflicts and conflict that should be eliminated while Thomas (1971) defined conflict management as a “process of cooperative confrontation”.
According to www.foundationcoalition.org, conflict management involves acquiring skills related to conflicts resolution, self awareness about conflicts modes, conflict communication skills, and establishing a structure for management of conflicts in your working environment.
Deetz and Stevenson (1986), believes management of conflict serves as a more useful concept of the process of dealing with conflict rather than the conception like conflict resolution.
The purpose of this assignment is to analyze the concept of Blake and Mouton conflict management styles as a tool whereby companies can more effectively manage conflict within their organizations. The concept of Blake and Mouton Managerial Grid provides a useful paradigm for helping individuals in an organization understand themselves and others. This assignment will focus on different types of conflicts that I have observed and how they had been handled or managed using Blake and Mouton’s model. The report will be focusing on Brightlands care home in medway county of Kent.
