Establishing a competitive advantage is an important factor for any establishment. Depending on the specific competitive advantage, this should be the priority strength so that a company can achieve profitability. Riordan Manufacturing, Inc. is an industry leader in the field of plastic injection molding (Riordan Manufacturing, 2004). Riordan Manufacturing is headquartered in San Jose, California and has manufacturing facilities in Pontiac, Michigan and Albany, Georgia (Riordan Manufacturing, 2004). Riordan Manufacturing has grown the organization’s services and product line to incorporate plastic drinking bottles and custom-made plastic parts.

Riordan Manufacturing currently has a well-built strategy in regard to process overview in all procedures such as molding, raw materials and input operations, and research and development. Once this new strategy commences, at the only international location in China, the goal of opening new factories in other countries can be achieved.
Differentiation is essential for Riordan Manufacturing because the market for plastic molding products has advanced since the company’s beginning. “Differentiation focus competitive strategy in which a company focuses on a particular target market to provide a differentiated product or service. This strategy is one of the business competitive strategies” (Wheelen, T.L. & Hubger, J.D. , 2008, p. 138). Although Riordan Manufacturing Inc. has a successful track record in providing quality products to consumers, Riordan wants to diversify its business market globally. To enter a global business market, Riordan Manufacturing, Inc. has to anticipate the needs of a global market while being aware of any risks that may be involved.
