Health Care Policies and Regulations Compared
According to Jun, Osborn, and Squires of the Commonwealth Fund, in their International Profiles of Health Care Systems (2012), the role of the government in the Norwegian health care system is that the government is fully responsible for funding and controlling the health care system (para. 1). However, if citizens want to opt out of the government-controlled health insurance and purchase private insurance, they are able to do that, as well. Health Care Economics
According to Kaiser EDU (2012), “Health expenditures in the United States neared $2.6 trillion in 2010, over ten times the $256 billion spent in 1980.” (para. 1). And, according to Herper, Langreth, Roy, and Whelan of Forbes Magazine (2011), “We are far above every other nation in health spending but don’t have the longevity to show for it. Health costs are by far the biggest threat to the nation's fiscal health in the long run.” (para. 1).
In comparison, “In 2010, Norway had the second-highest per-capita spending on health care among OECD countries, yet as a percent- age of GDP spent close to the OECD median (9.4%)… Public spending on health is financed through general taxation, and accounted for 85.5 percent of total health expenditure in 2010. Taxes are collected by the central government, counties, and municipalities. Taxpayers with high expenses as a result of permanent illness receive a tax deduction.” (p. 87).
