MLB’s Greatest of All-Time
Two of the world’s greatest baseball players to have ever lived were Jackie Robinson and Babe Ruth. Both of these men established a career in the game that they both loved so much. Both players had accomplishments that will always remain a part of our history in the sport of baseball. Although both are known as baseball legends, they also offer their differences. Their differences and similarities varied amongst not only their careers but also their personal lives. Throughout this essay, I will explore their beginnings, initial inspirations, careers, and what makes them the legends that they are known as today.

Robinson was not only a baseball player “but also” an African American baseball player. Because of this, he did not begin his career in the Major League. Robinson began playing in the Negro Leagues but was soon chosen by Branch Rickey, the president of the Brooklyn Dodgers, a Major League franchise. He wanted Jackie to help integrate Major League baseball where he soon joined an all-white Montreal Royals farm team for the Dodgers. Jackie was an American baseball player who became the first black Major League baseball player of the modern era. He broke the baseball color barrier when he debuted with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. He was the first Black man to play in the league since the 1880s (Wikipedia.org). This was an accomplishment in itself. Unlike Robinson, Babe Ruth went straight to the Major Leagues. He could do this because he was a White male. Although race played a major factor in many things at this time, both men had support from many different people.
Robinson was given support from Branch Rickey, President of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Rickey was an aggressive man and was quick to stand up for his rights with his intimidation skills and wanting to win. Robinson had an outstanding start with the Royals, leading the International League with a .349 batting average and .985 fielding average. However, his excellent year led him to the Dodgers where he stole home 19 times. On the other hand, Ruth was also offered support from friends, family, and fans. Over the course of his career Ruth went on to break baseball most important slugging record including a league in home runs, most total bases in a season and highest slugging percentage for a season. He hit a total of 714 home runs in all.
Although he was an American baseball player who spent 22 seasons in the major league playing for three teams. Babe Ruth was also known for his hitting brilliance. He was the first player to hit 60 home runs in one season. He had made his mark as baseball all-time home run leader. On the other hand’ Jackie had an exceptional baseball career himself....
