Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), incorporated in California in 1905, is one of the largest combination natural gas and electric utilities in the United States. There are approximately 20,000 employees who carry out PG&E Company's primary business, the transmission and delivery of energy. The company provides natural gas and electric service to approximately 15 million people throughout a 70,000-square-mile service area in northern and central California. PG&E is always looking for new ways to keep their employees satisfied at all levels in order to harness greater productivity and ideas from people while keeping them motivated and happy. It is clear that hourly employees have many great extrinsic motivators but lack intrinsic motivation in their job assignments which is a characteristic of our work culture. Changing the culture is one of the keys to improving motivation at that level of the organization because the best motivation occurs when employees perform because they want to and not because they are being made to do so. I am presently employed by PG&E, and work for the Information Systems Technology Services (ISTS) as a Telecom Design Engineer. ISTS is a unified organization comprised of various departments which collaborate effectively in order to deliver high quality technology solutions. My Department designs, develops, operates and maintains the technology and telecommunications systems that enable PG&E to meet its commitment to providing safe, reliable and affordable service to customers. ( Pacific Gas and Electric Company, 2014) IT supports the business by improving service quality, increasing capabilities through the development of additional functionality, implementing new technologies, reducing costs, increasing productivity, and facilitating organizational and business effectiveness through enabling technologies. ( Pacific Gas and Electric Company, 2014) Part of our responsibilities is to develop detailed engineering and designs, provide engineering cost estimates, create and maintain PG&E's telecommunications drawings, asset records, advise project teams on current standards and best practices. We are continuously improving our infrastructure, which in turn, provides us with more work than all can handle. So to achieve job satisfaction and motivation in the workplace, managers and supervisors encourage different motivational techniques. Advancement encouragement is another means of establishing employee motivation. Employees must be aware of promotional opportunities within an organization, and have access to a real open door policy. This is the forum for employees to make suggestions and ask questions. Telecommuting is another measure of motivation and job satisfaction. This allows employees to work from home with convenience and flexibility. Telecommuting is an option that can promote employee motivation and allow employees to benefit. Gas and Electric organizations in the company do not allow for this option, but it should be explored. There are days when employees have personal obligations and or need to spend quality time with family, where they can work from home quite comfortably. The company has a Work Life Balance...
