Assignment 1.1: Communication Process model
Directions: Think of 2 misunderstandings you experienced when communicating with someone else at work, home, or school. Then fill in the blanks of the chart below.

What was the message? | Christian completed a job on an aircraft. |

He approached Christian to see if he had fixed the cord. Christian had left work without entering the job data into CAMS. Mike had to call him back in and find out why Christian failed to fully complete the task given to him.
Ultimately, the fault lies with Christian. He did not decode the message sent from Mike properly. He only completed two parts of the job out of three. Part of the training for this career is knowing how and what to do on a daily basis and Christian misunderstood the basics of the job. The communication was not lost however. Christian ended up coming back and signing off the last part of the job. Mike on the other hand could have been more specific in his instruction. He could of easily broke it down into step by step directions to make it easier for Christian to understand instead of leaving his message as general as he did. Communication has a persuasive foundation and should be tailored to a specific audience (Arnett, McKendree, Fritz, Roberts 2008 Page 346). If every communication process has a persuasive background, then it is safe to say that Mike should have been more specific in how he wanted the job to be performed. He was not specific at all in how Christian should accomplish this. Generalities lead to a misunderstanding, which was most definitely learned from this activity (Cheesebro, O'Connor, Rios 2010 Chapter 1). Mike could have saved himself and Christian the trouble if he encoded his message better. If Christian had provided a thorough feedback, these two may have created the shared understanding to avoid the hassle of re-communicating the same information in another way later to figure out where the disconnect was.
