LO1 Be able to explore how communication skills are used in health and social care

Good communication in the Health and social care organization makes it possible for individuals to create relationships with the service users as well as their families, developing relationships with the fellow care workers and managers. It offers clear information to the service users as well as the other staff in carrying out appropriate reporting as well as recording. There may be communication impediments as well for instance poor hearing, speech and vision as well as inability to speak that may make it hard for communication. The organizations however come up with ways to cater for the challenges and ensure there is effective communication in the setting.

1. Explain one relevant theory of communication to health and social care context

Health and social care departments have comprise of a variety of service users. Care workers therefore need to apply a number of communication techniques through knowledge and skills as well as experiences. There are various theories that of communication that can be applied to health and social care setting. Abraham Maslow’s theory for instance serves as a good example of a theory that can be applied in health and social care. His theories were Behaviorist, Humanistic, Cognitive, Social, Biological and Psychoanalytical (Griffin, 2012).

Humanistic theory views every person as unique, with a variety of characteristics that other people can monitor through communication. The people communicating should show respect as well as kindness. In the context of health and social care, the care workers are supposed to view every service user as an individual since all service users exhibit different characteristics. The care workers should communicate to the service users with respect for the service users to understand them. In order to identify as well as understand the behavior of the individual service users, the care workers should assist them in solving problems, learning as well as making decisions in their daily lives.

Implementing Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, care workers should attend to the needs of service users in the health and social care home setting. They should provide to the service users adequate amount of food and water. They should not practice any form of discrimination against the service users. The care workers should keep the service users protected from any risks and the management should as well ensure that the service users do not undergo any form of abuse while in the care home. The service users should be able to trust the care workers so that they can be able to attend to them without any insecurity (Griffin, 2012).
