Communication it the transfer and understanding of meaning and to perform effectively, groups need to maintain some form of control over its members; stimulate members to perform, allow emotional expression and make decision choices. Managers must be able to communicate well with their employees in order to keep them motivated by letting them know what is to be done and how to do it effectively. Also, managers should communicate in order for employees to know how well they are doing the job and this plays a good role in the organization’s success. A good manager is someone who can motivate and communicate well with their employees, if her or she can do this well, then the employee satisfaction rate will be high. Another function which communication is a part of is the decision making process. Communicating provides the information a group or individuals need in order to make a decision. Almost every group or individual within an organization performs these functions, one if not all, and none of them is more important than the other. If each individual does not communicate amongst each other then it causes a chaotic situation.
However, there is a process in which communication can take place. It must also have a purpose which in this case is a message that is to be carried between a sender and a receiver. The sender initiates a message be encoding a thought. The message is the physical thought which the sender encodes. The channel is where the message travels. There are two types of channels which are formal and informal. The sender selects it whether the message is professional related within the organization which is said to be formal; and, informal channels are for spontaneous reasons such as gossip or to spread rumors. The way the individual interprets it will be the outcome of the individual’s response. The receiver then gets the message, and then they must translate it to their understanding which is known as decoding. After this, there is feedback which is to show whether the receiver understands the message as it was originally intended. Depending on how this message is conveyed or interpreted, a manager can either send a positive or negative message throughout the organization. The message can be switched up when it is being travelled from person to person or someone can interpret it different from others. This can be a form of travelling through the grapevine, where individuals within the organization gossip or spread wrong information amongst others. This is also a type of informal channeling.
