COM 321: Communication Theory (BCB 1238A)
The cornerstone of any relationship is the ability to communicate well. Communication is so important in any relationship, whether it be professional, personal, or intimate. It allows us to share our thoughts, interests, and concerns among each other. Strong communication is based on the way we listen and talk. We can all learn how to improve the way we communicate but it takes more than words to form a strong relationship. So many times the signals we are sending are not those that are intended. Interpersonal communication always uses intonation, diction and enunciation to give meaning to information. Intonation, diction and enunciation sometimes give more meaning to what is being said than the actual words themselves. In the following paragraphs, I will explain to the reader the importance of interpersonal communication in business.
My motivation for studying communications is to become a stronger leader and a more efficient communicator. I was not aware there was so much to the act of communicating until I began to engage in this process. In the beginning I thought it was about the act of talking, now to my surprise, I realize that this discipline is much more than just talking, it is about learning the art of persuasion, listening and language in all forms.
Language in itself affects our thoughts and behavior. This is apparent through a variety of everyday activities. Through this knowledge I am now more aware that appropriate communication can open many doors in my own life both personally and professionally. Understanding effective communication in my professional life will provide me with opportunities to excel in the social services arena, which is my passion. This course and the knowledge I have obtained has improved my learning and understanding that everyone has different communication styles and these styles can affect people in different ways. Personal constructs or beliefs about life and the world vary from person to person, with every new developed relationship I believe brings about refreshed views of a particular culture and is shaped and ultimately affected by how we act, speak, think and live our lives. It determines how we will respond to the world, other people, places and things. The response of the feedback develops further “constructs," which again increases our understanding of...
