Social Security and Retirement
In the United States, Americans need to plan for retirement. Social Security will not cover people’s needs when retiring. Americans who retire should use savings based on their personal investments, private savings accounts, employer’s pensions such as 401K, and Social Security so that they can live the rest of their lives comfortably. Americans that retire can receive full Social Security benefits depending on their year of birth. For example, baby boomers have the retirement age increased to age 67 for those born after 1960. In fact, early retirements remove today’s workers from the workforce, which cuts the payroll taxes that finance future Social Security benefits for long term recipients. Thus, Americans should look for ways to supplement their potentially diminishing Social Security benefits.
Another reason Americans should not depend on Social Security for retirement is that some may be forced into premature retirement, which will disqualify them from receiving full Social Security benefits. Americans can be forced into early retirement because of illness or disability. According to Green (2006), “The definition of disability in the Social Security Act is strict, and the rules for determining disability are complicated.” Green adds, “Applying for disability benefits can be a difficult experience for individuals with disabilities, not only because of the complexities of the program but also because of their disabilities.”(para.3). Last year my father fell short of his full earnings of social security when he became long-term disabled at the age of 57. My father was forced into premature retirement and today is facing challenges without possessing enough savings and resources to live comfortably. Although Social Security provides retirement benefits to the permanently and totally disabled, the benefits may not be enough source of income. Therefore, people should have an alternative financial plan other than Social Security.
Lastly, Americans should not depend on Social Security because the benefits may no longer be available. Some workers today may not pay enough Social Security taxes during their careers to cover their lifetime benefits. Social Security does not offer a long term financial incentive for Americans to work past the age of 65. The baby boomers born between the years of 1946 through 1964 in America are nearing retirement age or have already retired. My mother, who is a baby boomer, worked from the age of 18 and saved for her retirement with personal investments. My mother, now at the age of 67, retired at the age of 63. She successfully planned her retirement and is now living in her home, which she owns debt free. According to Olivia Mitchell, executive director of the...
