We all know that each individual in the world has different methods of learning and different personalities. Working in a group can be a challenge with all those differences. However, if done right it can be a successful experience. To start with, a person must have an understanding of each team member’s abilities.
Professor Howard Gardner’s states that intelligence is “a person’s ability to solve problems or fashion products that are useful in a particular cultural setting or community” (Carter, Kravits, Bishop, Block, 2007, p. 38). Another strategy is to assign tasks to individuals within their weak area. This is an opportunity to try to strengthen the skills in that category. If something is misunderstood or the team sees a mistake the team members can help in correcting it before the final assignment is due.
Personality makes a person unique and sets him or her apart from everyone else. The Personality Spectrum says that there are four types of personalities. They are Adventurer, Giver, Thinker, and Organizer (Carter, Kravits, Bishop, Block, 2007, p. 45). By knowing what personality someone is, everyone will know how to communicate and work effectively with him or her.
An organizer is an individual who prefers to have everything neat and tidy and is very particular with details. The giver is someone who likes to keep communication open and honest. They will also help others when needed. Someone who can solve problems hands-on and are good at negotiating are said to be the adventurers.
