Learning and Memory Worksheet
1. Write a 450- to 700-word essay to describe the relationship between classical and operant conditioning. Explain their elements and how they differ from one another. Additionally, provide an example for how learning can occur through each mode of conditioning. Explain how Ivan Pavlov and B.F. Skinner contributed to the study of learning and conditioning.
Classical and operant conditioning are important concepts to behavior psychology. While both result in learning, the processes are different. The elements of classical condition are neutral stimulus, unconditioned stimulus, conditioned stimulus, unconditioned response, ...view middle of the document...
An example of classical conditioning: This might work for something you are afraid of. I had a teacher who yelled at me, then every time after that my heart would beat faster when I would see her. Therefore, sight of the teacher became associated with increased heart rate. Another example is that I became sick after eating at a certain restaurant, and now even if I just see that restaurant I feel sick. An example of operant conditioning: Allowance is an example. When I take out the garbage I get money at the end of the week. Therefore, the allowance acts as positive reinforcement. Similarly, if I get a bad grade in school, I will be punished therefore I work hard at school so that I will not be punished.
Learning is a change in behavior or in potential behavior that occurs as a result of experience. Learning occurs most rapidly on a schedule of continuous reinforcement. However it is fairly easy to extinguish… switching to variable reinforcement after the desired behavior has been reached prevents extinction. In classical conditioning an individual learns through association and in operant conditioning, an individual learns through consequences.
