The Effects of the Civil War on Americans

The Civil War had a major effect on the United States and where we are today.
Historian Shelby Foote said,
Any understanding of this nation has to be based…on an understanding of the Civil War . . . The Civil War defined us as what we are, and it opened us to being what we became, good and bad things. It is very necessary if you’re going to understand the American character in the 20th century to learn about this enormous catastrophe of the mid-19th century. It was the crossroads of our being.

The Civil War is the central event in America's historical consciousness. While the Revolution of 1776-1783 created the United States, the Civil War of 1861-1865 determined what kind of nation it would be. The war resolved two fundamental questions left unresolved by the revolution: whether the United States was to be a dissolvable confederation of sovereign states or an indivisible nation with a sovereign national government; and whether this nation, born of a declaration that all men were created with an equal right to liberty, would continue to exist as the largest slaveholding country in the world. (McPherson, n.d.) So the Civil War sought to end slavery.
The north won the Civil War was able to win the war for the fact that they were able to provoke enough southerners to withdraw from their union altogether. Northerners made a good argument that if slavery were to be allowed in Texas and other parts of the west, the wealthy plantation owners would buy the land leaving very little for other farmers. (Schultz) Even though northern democrats were opposed to slavery they were still very racist and did not want to live in a majority black population. The northern victory preserved the United States as one nation. It ended the institution of slavery that had divided the country from its beginning. African Americans contribution helped the northerners win the victory over the southern democrats. African Americans were questionable at first in the Civil War. Though The Union Navy had begun accepting African Americans as volunteers they were still questionable....
