Paper 1 Cisco Systems

Cisco Systems heeft al jarenlang ervaring op het gebied van informatie uitwisselen tussen netwerken. De oprichters van dit bedrijf zijn Leonard Bosack en Sandy Lerner. Het hoofddoel van de onderneming was om oplossingen te vinden om netwerken op te zetten en te verbeteren. Het bedienen van de klant staat erg centraal binnen Cisco Systems, dit kwam sterk terug in het schrijven van het allereerste businessplan voor Cisco Systems. Tegenwoordig speelt de klanttevredenheid een grote rol binnen Cisco Systems en daarnaast is het belangrijk dat er sprake is van voortdurende ontwikkeling. Task control zorgt ervoor dat de taken effectief en efficiënt worden uitgevoerd. Hierbij gaat het om de regels en procedures voor de dagelijkse zaken.

Cisco Systems is momenteel gericht op het proces “Task control”, dit betekent dat meer gefocust wordt op de uitvoering dan de strategie en het beleid. De pijlers volgens deze strategie zijn voornamelijk gericht op de korte termijn, waarbij de lange termijn dus te weinig aandacht krijgt. Het bedrijf is groot geworden door het overnemen van kleine andere bedrijven. Hierdoor is de communicatie momenteel niet optimaal. Door de lastige samenhang tussen verschillende bedrijven en de mate van decentralisatie wordt dit alleen maar lastiger.

De 4 P’s van strategie.
Om de huidige strategie van Cisco systems vast te stellen, kijken wij naar het model “4 P’s van strategie” van Henry Mintzberg.
Het model bevat 4 verschillende invalshoeken om de strategie weer te geven. Zie de figuur hieronder voor de verschillende invalshoeken.

Het strategisch perspectief geeft de richting aan die de organisatie van Cisco op wil om zijn doelstellingen te bereiken. Eigenlijk kan het perspectief gezien worden als de visie en missie van de organisatie. Vanaf 1992 heeft Cisco een marktaandeel van 85% in handen en daarmee is ze wereldmarktleider op het gebied netwerkoplossingen. Om dit hoge marktaandeel in handen te krijgen heeft Cisco altijd gestreefd naar een zo hoog mogelijke klanttevredenheid. De visie van Cisco is om veranderingen, initiatieven en bijbehorende risico’s te omarmen. De focus van Cisco ligt op het gebied van innovatie, snelheid en klanttevredenheid.

De missie van Cisco is het grote marktaandeel te behouden en de klanttevredenheid verder te vergroten.

De strategische positie van Cisco geeft het onderscheidende vermogen aan dat Cisco heeft ten opzichte van haar concurrenten. Om het onderscheidende vermogen van Cisco naar voor te brengen is hieronder een korte SWOT analyse weergegeven.

Cisco heeft sinds 1992 een marktaandeel van 85% in handen. Cisco heeft dit hoge marktaandeel kunnen opbouwen door veel innovatie, kennis en vaardigheden in e-business te verkrijgen. Daarnaast heeft Cisco door jarenlange focus op het gebied van totaalservice een goede reputatie, grote naamsbekendheid en een hoge klanttevredenheid opgebouwd. Door overnames van kleine bedrijven binnen de branche heeft Cisco haar positie weten te versterken.

Binnen Cisco is door snelle groei weinig aandacht voor strategie en beleid, zo werd pas negen jaar de oprichting een businessplan opgesteld. Daarnaast heeft Cisco een hoge mate van decentralisatie, waardoor de communicatie tussen de businessunits verreweg van optimaal is.

In de e-business gaan de ontwikkelingen snel, wat er toe leidt dat voor Cisco genoeg mogelijkheden liggen om te blijven doorgroeien.
