Safeguarding children in early years setting
Theoretical perspectives on safeguarding have developed over the years and include a range of different themes and perspectives.(Oliver and Pitt 2011).Therefore I have decided to do my literature review on safeguarding children as I feel that gaining for knowledge on how to safeguard children I am able to be more confident and also apply them to my setting. I also want to improve my knowledge of current policies and practice aimed at safeguarding children and young people. In my setting I avoid to implement the safeguarding policies as I do not have much knowledge. The (VBS) was applied to England, Wales and Northern Ireland (2004) Lindon J (2012)
All this was because of Ian Huntley`s case, a man who was working in a school as a caretaker and his criminal records where not checked properly. He was known by the police but his information was not shared with other professionals. Regardless of him being known to the authorities he was still given the chance to work in the school. Later he killed two school girls Holley Well and Jessica Chapman. Therefore at my setting it is a mandatory to have a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) done even students and volunteers they have to do their DBS check before commencing work with the children. Even having their DBS done they are not allowed to be left alone with the children or change any nappies without supervision and we do not count them as part of staff or ratio.
According to Safeguarding (2003) Child maltreatment is common as practitioners we have to be able to recognise the signs. The main four signs of child abuse are Physical, Emotional, Neglect and Sexual abuse. Therefore sexual abuse is when they are forced or persuaded to take part in sexual activities. However this does not have to be physical contact and it can happen online. Sometimes the child will not understand that what is happening to them is abuse. They may not even understand that what they doing is wrong. Physical abuse is deliberately hurting a child causing injuries such as bruises, broken bones, burns or cuts. Children who are physically abused suffer violence such as being hit by a weapon, kicked, poisoned, burned, and slapped or having objects thrown at them. Neglect is the ongoing failure to meet a child's basic needs. A child may be left hungry or dirty, without adequate clothing, shelter, supervision, medical or health care. Emotional abuse can involve deliberately trying to scare or humiliate a child or isolating or ignoring them (Ward, Brown, Westlake and Munro, 2010). There are a variety of ways that you may be able to detect abuse. The children may be withdrawn away from themselves they do not act their usual way or participate in any activities. A child may disclose to you or you may observe some changes that concern you. However if a child disclose something to you will let them talk and you do not lead them into talking. Therefore in my setting we have a child protection officer who we can go to and share information if a child appears to be unhappy, physically, socially and emotionally. We collect information and observe the child and keep records in confidential file in the office. We will ask the parent how it happened and record in the accident book and ask the parent to sign. After the information is gathered, a decision is made and if there are concerns regard the child a further investigation might be required.
