Erikson suggests that passage
through each stage necessitates the resolution of a crisis or conflict, in his stages he would also
describe the positive and negative of the crisis of that period.

Erik Erikson describes his eight stages; in the first stage of psychosocial
Development is the trust-versus-mistrust stage; Erik felt that during the stage of birth to 1½ years
infants begin to develop feelings of trust if their needs of attachments are met while in proper
care and the interactions with others are positive, but if the care is inconsistent then that infant
means mistrust and when this happens that infant will be unable to meet the challenges required
in the next stage. The next stage is autonomy vs. doubt and the age range is 1½ to 3 years during
this stage children develop self -sufficiency by controlling activities such as eating, toilet
training, and talking. According to Erikson, during the period of autonomy is that child care
providers provide the appropriate amount of control. The third stage is Initiative vs. guilt,
according to Mossler,2011 when children gain autonomy they begin to master the world around
them.(Mossler,2011) For example my seven year old son got up one morning and fixed a bowl of
cereal, as he poured milk in the bowl the bowl ended up wasting in the floor, it was an accident,
but like some parents in this situation would fuss at their child and tell them their wrong, but
should I be mad at my son for an accident not really because he normally fixes his own cereal in
the morning anyway. According to our text children can be reinforced for taking the initiative or
feel guilt for having done something wrong(Mossler,2011). The key to helping children
overcome this initiative versus guilt conflict is to set balance limited goals in activities. The
fourth stage is industry versus inferiority stage which means that children develop a sense of
competence by mastering new skills. The first four stages Erikson psychosocial development
occurs during early childhood, but the last four occurs in adolescence and adulthood and those
are identity vs. role confusion were children develop a sense of self-esteem, intimacy vs.
isolation where Erik says that this is where teens begin to look for love and relationships;

Generativity vs. stagnation stage is where middle-age adults contribute to society, and the last
and final stage of psychosocial development is integrity vs. despair, and this is the stage where
older adolescence look back on their lives and their childhood. Erikson always said that
