I. Problem Statement
Operations manager of the firm that produces frozen dinners has been receiving numerous complaints from supermarkets with regards to it’s Chick-n-Gravy dinners. These complaints have been limited to five defects of Chick-n-Gravy dinners: underfilled packages, a missing item, spilled/mixed items, unacceptable taste, and packages that were improperly sealed.
The problem for this case would be how the defects as mentioned above could possibly be measured and what quality tools are to be used. Another would be, what Ann would be recommending to the manager once she has found out the results to the previous problem.

Seventeen defects were recorded because of a missing item. Fourteen defects were seen due to spilled or mixed dinners. Another reason was because the items were improperly sealed which had eleven defects recorded. Lastly, twenty two defects were recorded due to the unacceptable taste of the dinners. As it can be deduced, the reason of having an unacceptable taste garnered the highest defect rate.
The number of defects observed are large. It can have various implications with regards the operations of the company. The operation manager must look into the main source of these defects.
IV. Alternative Solutions
The firm could find new processing methods that could generate higher and better quality. Quality control or product engineers must be stationed in production areas so as to have someone constantly check the method and condition of each product being produced and manufactured by the firm. This at least, reiterates the importance of proper inspection every now and then for the products. However, if the defects had occurred because of the short time span they have, a planner is to also be involved to make sure the proper scheduling of certain processes happening inside the firm.
In the environmental perspective, an alternative could be to employ skilled workers and repair machines if it isn’t possible to upgrade it. It is therefore important to also train the workers to improve and keep up to the kind of workplace they have and towards the skill needed to meet its goals. As for the firm per se, it is vital to have a preventive maintenance sector so as to save costs for when certain machines and equipments may breakdown.
Performing another test to detect the source of the problem, workers or facilities is shown in the table below.
There is a total of 70 defects found, and as we can see from the table above, 22 / 70 are those of which have an unacceptable taste -- most frequent defect or problem. Next was the missing item followed by the spilled/mixed items.
