Catholicism and Islam are just two of the many religions that inhabit the world. While the two are similar in some aspects, it is the differences that clearly set them apart. “Muslim extremists” is one stereotype that clearly sets the two religions apart; rarely do you ever hear someone call a catholic an “extremist”.

There are approximately 2 billion believers in the catholic religion worldwide. Catholics believe in the Bible (Old & New Testament), while some believe it is the literal Word of God, others believe it is of inspired human accounts or human origin only, having true prophets. The doctrines of the catholic faith are summarized in the Apostle’s Creed and Nicene Creed and the religious law is canon law (with additional written authority vested in papal decrees). The Roman Catholic Church vests reverence in saints and church fathers. Human nature inherited “original sin” from Adam, with a tendency to do evil. Means of salvation are correct belief, faith, good deeds, and the sacraments. One is believed to be predestined to reach an eternal heaven, eternal hell (temporary purgatory in Catholicism). Catholics worship in a church, cathedral, or basilica on Sunday (head not covered) under direction of a priest, bishop, archbishop, or pope (with a deacon sometimes assisting worship). Catholics believe in the Sacraments as a part of their major rituals (baptism and communion of the Eucharist are two examples of the Sacraments) (ReligionFacts).

Both religions believe in salvation by a complicated system of works, denying salvation by faith alone (what some Protestant religions believe).
