A tsunami is a series of ocean waves that sends surges of water, sometimes reaching heights of over 100 feet (30.5 meters), onto land. These walls of water can cause widespread destruction when they crash ashore.The tidal wave starts at the back of the forest and works its way toward the beach, meaning that if you are unable to run to another sector, you’re definitely going to drown. The wave is just too wide and too powerful to survive. Even if you happen to outrun it, you wind up running into more water.

The lightning tree introduces (naturally, without raising the suspicions of anyone else) the element of controlled, predictable burst of electricity in a pre-designated location, which obviously is of benefit to Beetee. Furthermore, it is a clear and concise way for the tributes to keep track of what time it is, even if they aren't anywhere near the section that is enduring it's 'hour'. It's the equivalent of Big Ben striking 12.

It tosses anything that hits it back to where it was before, so tributes couldn't commit suicide by jumping off the roof of the Training Center. It was also used to protect Gamemakers from tribute attacks.
The Clock Arena
The arena is a perfect circle divided into twelve sections. Every hour, a certain disaster of sorts occurs in one of the programmed areas. For example, when the clock strikes midnight, lightning will surge through one of the areas of the arena. The cornucopia is in the middle of this arena, this clock, with the tail end of it pointing towards the section with the lightning - twelve o'clock.
