Phil ToweSept 4, 2013EDUC 304Case Study #1Minimizing Distractions:Edward is a third grader who is becoming distracted during his independent work in his classroom. He is sitting up close near the board per his IEP; however he is still struggling with daily distractions that is preventing him from completing his tasks. Based on class observations, I decided to sit in the seat where Edward sits to see if I could identify anything that could be a hindrance. Almost immediately, I noticed that to the right of Edward's seat was a big window that overlooked the playground. Thinking back, I can recall that anytime a class is outside for recess I have to call on Edward to focus. Lowering the blind on this window and closing them will eliminate this distraction for not only Edward but also for all the students. Maximizing Access:Because of where Edward sits, I don't know if we are maximizing access with him in our classroom. Because Edward sits to the right of the classroom and to the right of where I lecture, I think he would be better served by sitting in the front row in the middle section facing the chalkboard. Students who sit in the front row and down the center of the classroom are more likely to receive the attention of the teacher (Good, 2000). I believe he will benefit from the eye contact from me by sitting in good proximity to the place I teach from; which is just to the right of the chalkboard. Also, he will be facing me and will have a clear sight line to me and I will have a clear sight line on him. By moving him to this new seat and by removing the other things that distracted him, this will hopefully keep him more focused. I will be able to monitor him better too by him sitting in the middle, when I move throughout the class I can monitor his actions.Matching Room Arrangements to Lesson Purpose: According to Lambert's research, sitting in rows would help Edward in his independent study. Currently the classroom is set up with paired desks throughout the classroom with groups of four and one group of six. This is a great set up for group tasks and social interaction; however for independent work this is a hindrance for some including Edward. What I have decided to do is to become more flexible in my classroom arrangement depending on whatever lesson I will have for the day. For independent student work, I will arrange the classroom in rows. This will allow for individual space and a work station for their own work. With Edward, I will put him in the front up the middle facing the board and myself as mentioned before. Based on whatever lessons I have planned, I will arrange my class the way that will benefit all my students involved based on the class's and their individual learning needs.
