Career Development Plan Part III
Management is a word that encompasses many tasks. The particular tasks this paper is addressing will be the role of managers using a tool such as a performance appraisal to help shape the careers of future managers. Whether the manager likes it or not at least once a year he or she will need to do appraisals for the staff he or she is in direct responsibility for. Doing appraisals should be looked upon as a tool that can help all involved.

If at any time changes are made after this orientation to the performance appraisal system employees will be made aware immediately to avoid any miscommunication at the time of review. The anniversary date of an employee will be the date of review to alleviate the stress of when the review will commence.
Management needs to appreciate the opportunity the appraisal system can offer when used correctly. Management needs to be properly trained and encouraged to want to improve and enhance the performance of employees. Employees and how well they perform is a direct reflection upon the manager. When going through prior years appraisals one should see growth within an individual. The purpose of the appraisal is improvement of performance and career growth.
Managers have three specific areas to address for the appraisal system to reach maximum potential. Be it a team project or an individual defining performance is number one (Cascio, 2005, Chapter 9). Communication is so vital for completion of anything. If all involved know what is expected of them then there are no surprises later. The next crucial step for maximum results is a manager who actively facilitates performance (Cascio, 2005, Chapter 9). Actions speak louder than words and helping make sure that goals set can be reach will speak volumes....
