Business is not only for profit but for nation building
In many organizations, businesses are built mainly for the purpose of profit generation. Most successful businesses are those who are successful enough to continuously generate sizable profits in their business activities. Business, according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary is a usually commercial or mercantile activity engaged in as means of livelihood. It is the nature of a business to generate profit for it to be sustainable and for it to survive.

As Per Capita Income increases, the buying capacity of the public increases as well, thus also increases economic and business activities of the local economy.
In the Philippine setting today, most of the businesses purely focus on profit generation alone. Most of business owners do not give much attention to nation building. In fact, Filipino business owners do not pay proper taxes, wages, and do not abide most of government policies in order to decrease cost. These practices hinder the entire country from moving forward.
The main reason for this is the lack of patriotism, which is also exemplified by the government officials. Many countries have been backward compared to the Philippines during the mid 1900s, but are now more advance because of their being nationalistic and patriotic. Philippines politics has always been associated with corruption, self-serving politicians, and anything dirty.
On the other hand, business without conscience is greed. Every business should incorporate nation building in its mission and vision. There are many ways to be socially responsible. It means being a good corporate citizen. According to Richard Daft, corporate social responsibility is management’s obligation to make choices and take actions that will contribute to the welfare and interests of society as well as the organization. Social responsibility can be a difficult concept to grasp because people have different beliefs as to which actions improve society’s welfare. At the very least, each organizations should follow all government policies, pay right taxes, and pay proper wages. To go one step further, organizations could make projects or programs for different causes that could address the needs of the society.
Nation building is not merely the responsibility of the government or any group of people. Nation building is the responsibility of the entire populace. It should always a conscious effort of every individual or organization to incorporate nation building in their daily endeavor. The success and failure of every country directly affects its citizens. Any positive changes that will be brought about the nation’s success will be the enjoyment and pride of every citizen.
