Many professionals enter into the field of social work to help others grow and improve their life circumstance. Those who are preparing for a career as a social worker need to possess the ability and skill of professional boundary setting.

McPherson (2011) stated “the motivation may be entirely honorable, but due to the over involvement the worker crosses a professional boundary leaving them to allegation of misconduct” (p.111). Social workers should always show respect and uphold their dignity with loyalty to their profession.
Social workers should not enter into sexual relationships with anyone who have connection with their work. The NASW Insurance Trust lists sexual impropriety with clients as the second most frequent charge against social workers. The NASW Code of Ethics states: “under no circumstance should a social worker engage in sexual activities or sexual contact with clients whether such contact is consensual or forced”. Sexual behavior is one of the ethical and professional boundary setting skills that helps the worker limit themselves to the risk of exploitation or potential harm to the client.
Sound decision making should be demonstrated on a daily basis in regards to boundary setting. Knowing how and when to apply boundary setting skills is key to an effective career in social work.
