My critique is on a self-help book for stress management called "Stress Free for Good" Luskin, Frederic, and Ken Pelletier. Stress Free for Good: 10 Scientifically Proven Life Skills for Health and Happiness. SanFrancisco: HarperSanFrancisco, 2006. Purchased at Barnes and Noble for $13.95.Dr. Fred Luskin and Dr. Kenneth Pelletier spent years conducting research at Stanford University School of Medicine. Working together, they developed ten proven skills to help eliminate stress, anxiety, and pain that occur in daily life with sound advice.The main purpose of the book "Stress Free for Good" is to provide necessary skills to help overcome stress and lead a healthy fulfilling life. I will start by saying: "Stress Free for Good" is broken down into thirteen easy to read/follow chapters starting with an understanding of Life Skills (exercises to help relieve stress.) Most chapters have a Life Skill (exercise) to go along with the purpose of the chapter's title. For example: The title of chapter four is "So much to appreciate" (p.75) goes into explaining that, life can shot down at times, but there are a lot of things to be appreciate of with a Life Skill (exercise) of appreciation to go along with chapter 4. The book offers a good amount of visual diagrams, which I found very helpful when interpreting various explanations. (p. 49) shows the actual heartbeat on an EKG pointing out the five phases of stress on the heart. The book eases the reader into one chapter after another-starting small and working up.One of the biggest weakness I noticed right away was that; Yes, the book offered a lot of real life experiences and different causes of stressors in everyday lives and how they claim to say their technique works for everyone, but…..The authors failed to make the connection between stress and athletes. As an athlete, I felt I could not relate the stressors I have experienced to some of the authors explanations because sports are a mix of peer pressure and perfectionism, what does that equal? I think discovering a Life Skill for athletes would have completed the book."Stress Free for Good" is a wonderful easy to read and follow book with many exercises to help reduce stress to help people live happy and fulfilling lives. Very informative book, but would like to see an added chapter dedicated to athletes.
