People have been altering the genomes of plants and animals for many years using traditional breeding techniques; this is an artificial selection that organisms that exhibits specific traits are chosen to breed. In recent decades, however, advances in the field of genetic engineering have allowed for precise control over the genetic changes introduced into an organism. (Theresa Phillips, 2008)Today, we can incorporate new genes from one species into a completely unrelated species through genetic engineering, optimizing agricultural performance or facilitating the production of valuable pharmaceutical substances. A number of animals have also been genetically engineered to increase yield and decrease susceptibility to disease. (Theresa Phillips, 2008)For example, salmon have been engineered to grow large, mature a lot faster and cattle’s are more resistance to mad cow disease.
There are many different types of genetic modification they are used for different types of combing and extraction of the genetic information. Biotechnology is a term used when referring to organisms and components to make organisms. (Enquiries, 2007) DNA technology molecules are DNA molecules formed by laboratory methods of genetic recombination (such as molecular cloning) to bring together genetic material from multiple sources, creating sequences that would not otherwise be found in biological organisms this is used when referring actually genetically modifying the organism to make something new. (jesse bloom, 2009)Some organisms that are made through this technology are foods, vaccines, animal food, cures to diseases. The biggest use for genetic modification is for crops. Genetic modification of crops is mostly used to help the crops to create their own pesticides and insect repellent. The major crops that are genetically modified for these reasons foods such as, corn, cotton, canola, and alfalfa. Other foods are genetically modified to be virus resistant, increase vitamins such as iron. Bananas are currently being tested to produce human vaccines to help against diseases, such as Hepatitis B.
Despite the fact that genes are being transferred to try and make improvements as some may thing, and some people think otherwise this ongoing topic has some huge news in the media about the do’s and don’ts of genetically engineering. Some people believe that tampering with nature is intrinsically wrong, and others maintain that inserting plant genes in animals, or vice versa, is immoral. (jesse bloom, 2009)When it comes to genetically modified foods, those who feel strongly that the development of GMOs is against nature or religion have called for clear labeling rules so they can make informed selections when choosing which items to purchase. Respect for consumer choice and assumed risk is as important as having safeguards to prevent mixing of genetically modified products with non-genetically modified foods. In order to determine the requirements for such safeguards, there must be a definitive assessment of what constitutes a GMO and universal agreement on how products should be labeled.
