Bio-Carbon Capture by Beema Bamboo

By Dr N. Barathi, Growmore Biotech Ltd

Climate change has become one of the major challenges for mankind and the natural environment. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions released into the atmosphere in ever rapidly growing volumes are recognised to be responsible for this change. Carbon dioxide is one of the major green house gas which can be effectively brought down fast by trees that grows fast by absorbing co2. Beema Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on earth, grows one and half feet a day in India. Beema Bamboo acts as a carbon sink for CO2 emission of Chennai.

When fossil fuels are burnt, carbon is removed from below ground (gas and oil ...view middle of the document...

Bamboo is the best practical atmospheric carbon sequestering biomass and the fastest and less expensive way to off-set carbon dioxide emission and water pollution. The best clones of bamboo – BEEMA, under ideal condition can sequester 500 kgs. of carbon dioxide every year by a single tree which in other words over 80 tonnes of carbon dioxide per acre/year. The carbon content in the Beema bamboo varies between 46 to 50% in its biomass depending on the parts of the bamboo. The superiority of Beema bamboo in sequestering the carbon dioxide is due to the fact that it has the ability to grow 1 ½ feet a day and has very thick wall. While sequestering the carbon dioxide, huge quantity of Oxygen is being released in the atmosphere as byproduct which makes the place oxygen rich and carbon neutral.

Bamboo has several other environmental benefits. If it is used to produce energy, it will reduce the risk of global warming by replacing fossil fuels (coal, natural gas and oil).
The accumulation of carbon in plant is known as carbon sequestration, and is considered to be a very important strategy...

Sustainability of Carbon Capture Essay

671 words - 3 pages Carbon Capture and Sequestration: A Step towards Sustainability Our planet, on its current course, is on a steady march towards its death. Each year we do more and more to destroy our environment. One huge component to this destruction is the emission of greenhouse gases, mainly, carbon dioxide. Greenhouse gases are gases that when present in our atmosphere, trap the heat of the sun and progressively make earth warmer and warmer. This is

Urban Air Pollution

5203 words - 21 pages . transportation sector is responsible for one third of our   country's carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. CO2 is considered to be a   greenhouse gas, the build-up of which may lead to global climate   change. These emissions result from combusting fossil fuels, which   releases the carbon content of the fuels into the atmosphere.   Producing and using bio fuels for transportation can help reduce CO2   build up in two important ways: by
