Behavioral Theories

Leadership is the process of influencing others toward achievement of goals. In leadership there are more than one theory that can describe the process of leadership and the styles of the leaders. Behavioral theories are from leadership theories that differentiate between the effective leaders from ineffective leaders. Behavioral Theories are included three studies, which are:
* University of Iowa Studies
* The Ohio State Studies
* University of Michigan Studies
A bout the first studies, University of Iowa Studies, these studies is talking about three leadership behaviors or styles: Democratic, Autocratic and Laissez-faire.
A leader with Democratic style tends to involve employees in decision making, encourage participation in deciding work methods and goals, and use feedback as an opportunity to coach employees.

* Initiating structure: structuring the work and define the role of the employees in order to attain the goals.

The third study in behavioral theories, the University of Michigan. Also it has two styles for leaders:
* Employee-oriented: emphasized interpersonal relations, and taking a personal interest in the needs of employees.
* Production-oriented leader: a leader who care about technical aspects of the job, and care about the process and results.

Now after presented the three studies of the behavioral theories I will present my opinion in each one of the studies. For the University of Iowa studies which talks about the three styles of leaders, I see that both Democratic style and Laissez-faire are close to each other and they are effective styles, because when there is participation between leaders and employees, that leads to need fulfillment for employees, which make them more satisfaction, give them motivation which leads to high productivity and performance. So, the best leaders are those who can use many different styles, and choose the right style for each situation. This was for the Iwo studies, but for the Ohio state studies which talks about two types of the leaders, consideration, and initiating structure. From my opinion in this studies I am with the consideration style because it considers others ideas, suggestions and feelings, also concerns about the welfare of the group. So that will make the group more satisfaction and their performance will be high with motivation from leader and that will make the leader achieved his goal in a way that the both sides will be satisfied.
Now for the third studies, University of Michigan Studies, I think that the employee-oriented is more effective than production-oriented. Because employee-oriented focus on employees and their needs which make them more satisfaction in their jobs, they feel that they are important, correct, and inspired. Also the leader is accepting individual differences among members. So that make them working better and more which increase the group productivity.
