Audience Analysis
When presented with the task of delivering information to an audience, this may be something that comes more naturally to some. To these people, it may be a simple task. To others it may be terrifying. Most people are not born with these skills, although some may have been blessed with the gift of “gab,” certain skills must be learned and practiced in order to become a great public speaker. This analysis will bring forth strategies to be applied to communicate with specific personality types, allowing for the message to hit closer to home, so to speak.
Culture is important to take into consideration as well, especially since a number of the audience may share culture. Understanding the values, philosophies, and attitudes of your audience, is the key to success of the message you’re trying to communicate. For this example, because the managers and salespeople are from the same corporation, they will also be of the same culture, as far as the audience you are presenting to. As important as culture is to your main objective, so too, is the discourse community.
The discourse community will shed light onto assumptions the audience may share on channels, formats and styles used for communication (Lockler & Kienzler, 2008). Common beliefs as to the topics, may be shared by the members of the discourse community, and should be discussed, finding evidence to support. Once this information has been released, it is imperative that large organizational groups are met with appeal. For this audience all the necessary information is revealed to the disclosure community, being the managers, therefore the appropriate channels of communication have been activated.
A communication channel is how the message will be delivered to the audience (Lockler & Kienzler, 2008). Multiple lines of communication may be required, depending upon the groups that make up the audience. To minimize emotion, present complicated information, or large amounts of information, written communication is the best delivery method. Oral communication, on the other hand, is best for obtaining immediate response and actions, to persuade or focus attention on specific points. Another issue that demands consideration, would be diversity of the audience, such as demographic and psychographic characteristics.
Demographics are facts about your audience that can be counted, such as age, race, religion, sex, education, and income, just to name a few. Understanding why these facts are so important are easy. The message should appeal to the members of the audience from these categories. Collected facts about the demographics of your audience is important, but not the only method of gathering information. Psychographic characteristics may help you to build a target message as well.
