Attachment

From birth, we are always surrounded by people. The doctors and nurses who deliver us. The parents who raise us and help us to become an adult. The family members that always want to be around us. The people we stand in line next to in the grocery store. We come in contact with a lot of people throughout our lifetime. We have different relationships with each one of them. People are emotionally connected with others in different ways. As we grow older, we socially develop and create attachment relationships with the people in our lives. The first phase is referred to as Pre attachment. This usually occurs from birth to around two months. The baby is generally social. They will look at and interact with any person who looks and talks to them. Infants seem to have a liking for everyone. The second phase is called Attachment in the Making. This generally happens anywhere from two to eight months old. At this stage, the baby might start to take a particular liking to some people. They will still interact and socialize with everyone they come in contact with, but they start preferring people over others. This preference is usually only slight, but it is noticeable.
Phase three is the most critical stage in the development of attachment. The Full-Fledged or Clear-Cut Attachment phase is when a child wants to stay close to the person or people they are become most attached to. There is a very significant change to how the child acts when the person they prefer to be around leaves their sight and is no longer giving them attention. They develop a type of separation distress when they are not around. This can happen from eight months up to two years old. This separation distress has to do with the idea of object permanence. Object permanence is knowing that something is near you or there without you being able to see them. This idea has not been fully developed yet, so that is why the separation from their attachment figure is so distressing to them. They are not yet socially and cognitively developed for object permanence to be understood. And the final phase of attachment is the Formation of a Reciprocal Relationship. This stage usually occurs from 18 months to beyond two years. In this stage, the child is able to handle being separated from the one or ones they are most attached to. By this time, object permanence has developed and they are able to think about their attachment figure when they are not around. Just thinking about that certain person or certain people is enough for them. They do not have to be around them. The separation distress is not nearly as stressful to them as it was in the previous phase. This final phase is also seen as the goal of attachment. The child is now able to be away from their attachment figure without being overcome with distress and they are able to do things such as go to preschool without become overly upset. Developing this attachment and these close relationships with people is very important to us not only as children, but as adults, too. The relationships we form very young can last us our entire lives.
Children develop according to three factors: individual, social, and cultural. Individual factors have to do with the person as an individual.
