Problem Statement
The problem is that schools are not implementing the necessary motivational tools for “At-Risk” students that are already lacking in motivation themselves. This problem results in “At-Risk” students falling short of the appropriate next steps to succeed academically.
This is more succinct:

Abstract
Chapter 1
Background
Education is arguably one of the most influential parts of a person’s life. In this day and time, so many opportunities are determined by the level of academic achievement that one obtains. For example, according to one article from Time Magazine, two economists “examined the connection between individuals’ IQ and academic performance, measured in the last year of high school, and how much money they were making in their mid-30s and early 50s”. (http://ideas.time.com/2013/11/18/does-high-school-determine-the-rest-of-your-life/). The study, in the end, showed just how a person’s educational experience can completely shape their life. The article concluded that it is especially hard for at-risk students, because “Education is critical to making our way in today’s society, especially today’s economy, and kids who miss out on the full academic and social experience of high school will feel the effects of that lack reverberate through their lives for many years to come.” (http://ideas.time.com/2013/11/18/does-high-school-determine-the-rest-of-your-life/). However, unfortunately,

Review of Literature
There were quite a few blatant commonalities that were uncovered with each piece of literature that I reviewed. However, there were also articles that provided new insight and a different outlook as it pertains to strategies for improving success in academics for At-Risk students. For example, one magazine article approached this problem from the point of view of a “media specialist” and explains that embracing the attributes of a “turnaround teacher” are key. The attributes that the authors describe as the “3 C’s” are connection, competence and contribution, therefore “The ‘turnaround’ media specialist cares about students and connects with them”.
