Abstract
This paper will review an organization and the diverse populations it serves, including the cost for services. Who is eligible for services, role in prevention, education on mental health, wellness, the diverse populations, intervention, consultation, advocacy, and the diverse populations it serves. This paper will identify and discuss a public policy, how well the organization manifests cultural competence and if this organization be placed on the continuum of cultural competence. Choices Group is working toward those who have private insurance, they are in the middle of this transition. Choices Group is accessible to the public transportation, they even provide bus passes to their clients (Eno, 2014).
Choice’s clients are assessed for mental health after they have completed a screening for emotional problems. If the client has answered yes to any of the questions on the screening, they are then seen through mental health to further the assessment. If mental health services are needed Choice’s will provide the proper services to help the clients cope with their mental health concerns. Choice’s do not have psychiatrist, if the clients are needing medications, then Choice’s will refer the client out to another agency to get the help they need (Eno, 2014).
The role in education on mental health and wellness is with the clients at Choice’s. The form of education they provide is accessible, comprehensive, and integrated services for children, adolescents, and adults thus assisting clients in achieving social integration by serving as an alternative to institutional care, and by providing clients with opportunities to live in family and community settings (Eno, 2014).
The role with respect to intervention at Choice’s is Cognitive behavioral therapy which helps improve client’s moods and behavior by changing their way thinking; also, how they interpret events and talk to themselves. This form of psychotherapy helps guide people into thinking more realistically and teaches them coping strategies to deal with their depression. Cognitive therapy is in most cases a short-term treatment that can have long-term results. Cognitive behavioral therapy uses the ABC model. A stands for action or activating event, B represents beliefs or thoughts that are created from the activating event, and C represents consequences or how we react to the event (Sue & Sue 2013).
The services that Choice’s provide are to the clients only and the staff is culturally diverse at Choice’s. The staff need to partake in training to become culturally diverse. In order for them to keep their license they need to attend continuing education units that specifically address diversity within the substance use disorder population. There are several strategies that is used to address multicultural issues to advocate for the diverse population. Working with the community to increase knowledge of the critical factor of multicultural issues, this will gain support and trust within the community. Training toward cultural competency will provide a safe environment when providing services to the multicultural population. Understanding the policies of the organization will enhance quality assurance so advocacy can be established within the treatment process (Lassiter, & Chang, 2006).
