Assess the functionalist view of education (20 marks)
In this essay, one will be testing out the functionalist view of education. Functionalism is a macro, consensus theory that has the idea that society is functioning well and efficiently. Functionalists believe education provides universalistic norms i.e they see it promotes the norms and values of wider society. One would suggest that Functionalists are bit naive in their view of the education system, as it could be argued that education doesn't benefit everyone, especially the working class.

The third functionalist concept, one will be testing out is Role Allocation. Which simply says that education allocates people to the most appropriate jobs for their talents, using examinations and qualifications. Functionalist believe that schools provide a level playing field to assess the abilities of students and the qualifications they gain are the basis for their career path. This ensures that people achieve jobs, responsibilities and pay to commensurate with their talents. In juxtaposition, Marxists would say that yes, school ensures that the middle class get the best jobs- but the hidden curriculum ensures working class children end up in rubbish jobs, but they would argue that this has little to do with ability. One would argue that, education does allocate you into the roles you're suited to because it tells you what you're good at, but one can see the Marxists point because the middle class usually do end up in the best jobs.

The fourth functionalist concept, one will be testing out is Skill Provision. This says that education teaches the skills required by a modern industrial society. These include both general skills such as literacy and numeracy, and more specific skills needed for particular occupations. The functionalist view on this is that there are a range of educational routes which ensure that students receive the skills necessary to ensure all the different roles in society can be fulfilled. In juxtaposition, Interactionalists would argue that it's all about your social capital, it's not what you know, it's who you know. One would suggest that Interactionalists have the better argument in this case as one believes this is true, it's difficult to get employed if you have no personal links, even with brilliant qualifications.

The fifth functionalist concept, one will be testing out is Secondary Socialisation. This says that education helps to maintain society by socialising young people into key cultural values such as achievement, competition, individualism and morality.
