The developing field of geology in early 19th century is introduced, along with those whose research became important through its study. Dr. Mortenson makes note of earlier French works (Epochs of Nature (1778), Exposition of the System of the Universe (1796), and Zoological Philosophy (1809)) and their respective authors (Comte de Buffon (1708-88), Pierre Laplace (1749-1827), and Jean Lamarck (1744-1829)) whom served as a basis for the new studies (Mortenson, 2003). It is also explained that there were three different views of earth history by early 19th century. These views consisted of Catastrophists, Uniformitarians, and scriptural geologists. The author goes as far as to mention early scriptural geologists and details the impact that they had on a Christian worldview towards the creation of the earth. (Mortenson, 2003)
Weaknesses.
Dr. Mortenson mentions various publications and theories that were used by different contributing members of the scientific community. However, what is not mentioned is society’s reaction to the publications and theories or their respective contributor. It is unknown whether ideals were widely accepted, or greatly ridiculed. (Mortenson, 2003)
Conclusion.
“The Origin of Old-Earth Geology and its Ramifications for Life in the 21st Century” by Dr. Terry Mortenson is an insightful publication on theories regarding the earth’s creation and history utilizing geology. ‘Scriptural geologists’ as well as those partial to old earth ideals are introduced along with their respective theories and backgrounds. The progression of both groups over time is explained accompanied by various supporting ideals. Dr. Mortenson mentions catastrophic environmental changes, as well as other geological findings, and their importance in both old and new earth theories.
