Art Is Life Essay

1460 words - 6 pages

In my mind, art is anything created by man to beautify the world. But how I perceive things, isn't always correct. I wanted to know the true meaning, so I looked it up on the internet. It seems everyone has a different idea of what art is. Ask.com (2006) has many definitions of art as a noun. They are as follows:1.Human effort to imitate, supplement, alter, or counteract the work of nature.2. a. the conscious production or arrangement of sounds, colors, forms, movements, or other elements in a manner that affects the sense of a beauty, specifically the production of the beautiful in a graphic or plastic medium.b.the study of these activities.c.the product of these activities; human works of ...view middle of the document...

A huge piece of polished aluminum, cut into a wedge, with holes ground in it. You can see this at www.artisticnetwork.net/webonizer_core/show_image.php?id=1949. I use the same definition as with the last piece of art, 2a. With the smooth lines, and shiny exterior, this 25x29x43 wedge of cheese is eye catching. This 3-dimensional sculpture is also known as a full sculpture, because it can be viewed from any angle, and still seen as a 3-dimensional form (B. Gray, 2006).For architecture, Saddam's Palace in Babylon, Iraq is depicted. The URL is http://architecture.about.com/library/bl-babylon02.htm. The main reason I chose this for art is because of the beautiful columns and arches, and it is shaped like a stepped pyramid. This building is massive with over 600 rooms and is made of sand (about:architecture, 2007). This is art because it is a system of principles and methods employed in the performance of a set of activities (ask.com, 2006), and that is the building in this case.Photography is the next type of art. The photo of Arlington National Cemetery taken by Chaoser in 2001, is a reminder of what our country is faced with daily. The URL is www.photoinf.com/General/Gao_Mu/Introduction_To _Photography_Composition.htm.The photo depicts rows upon rows of flowerless headstones, with one headstone in the foreground with 2 potted plants in front of it. John (the name on the headstone) is a lucky person to have someone who still remembers him (photoinf.com, 2003-2005). The meaning I chose for this piece of art is the third one; high quality of conception or execution (ask.com, 2006). It is a beautiful photograph, but it also has meaning. Photographs catches some emotions that a painting or sculpture cannot. That is why it is art.Sebastian Munster was a good printmaker. He would take a block of wood, and draw a design on it. Anything that wasn't to be painted would be cut or chipped away. This is called woodcutting, or relief printing. The remaining wood would be colored by use of a variety of mediums and pressed against paper, or some type of canvas (artelino.com, 2001-2007). The URL where you can see Sebastian's work is www.artelino.com/articles/printmaking.asp. This type of art takes a lot of time and thought to complete. Definition 3 is the one I chose for this type of art because of the work involved and the finished product. I consider this art because of the time and dedication required for such a work. For Conceptual Art, I chose a work by Simon Sterling called The Shed and The Bike. It won the 2005 Turner Prize Installation. Imagine a dilapidated old 4 stall shed, and a 1970's bicycle (Guardian Unlimited.com, 2006). The definition for this has to be 6b; a trade of craft that applies such a system of principles and...
