The varsity boat consisted of 8 better individual players than the junior varsity boat. These two were the teams which was coached by Coach Preczewski. However, Coach P. was in a dilemma because the Junior varsity team was continuously beating the most experienced side of Varsity boat.
Answer to Question 1:
According to Coach, P. rowing is a team sport of 8 members. It is not an individual sport but a team sport. There is no distinction of best player in this type of sport. Each individual must contribute to the teams’ performance as a whole and the growing needs to be balanced with the other members of the team. The weakness of one player needs to be balanced with the other players. An individual’s extra strength could turn out to be the weakness in this case. The junior varsity team consistently defeated the other team because the Varsity team consisted of physically strong rowers. However, this is a team sport and the performance needs to be in sync with the other members of the team. An individual exerting extra force is, in fact, harming the team’s performance. So, although the team had better individual players, the Varsity team lacked team performance which is utmost in this sport. There was the presence of team disrupters whose efforts resulted in the failure of the entire team.
Answer to Question 2:
Coach P. had resolved to increase the personal performance of each lower during the winter and spring season. He conducted erg test in order to test the physicality of each rower. However, being an experienced coach he had to analyze that rowing is a team sport and it is not about enhancing personal technical skills but about removing the teams’ skill. During the spring and winter season break, he should have intervened and build a team rather than the good individual player. The Varsity team though had good players but lacked team spirit. They had confidence in them when they defeated the junior team in the first practice. The exchange of emails and the discussions proved that the players were not happy with the team. Thus, the coach should have taken psychological...
