"TQM and BPR are just management fads that have passed their use-by date!" Total Quality Management and Business Process Reengineering have been the two most talked about (and implemented) business improvement strategies of the past decade. I like to think of the two strategies as complementary rather than as contending since they have different focuses but the same result albeit to different degrees of improvement. To say that they are outdated and no longer useful is, in my opinion, an inaccurate statement.Firstly, there are not many other quality improvement strategies around that are enjoying the same success as TQM and BPR are. They are general strategies that can be implemented (or not implemented) on underperforming processes in a business and if done correctly in the right situations, will be the catalyst for major improvement in the business process. BPR attempts to reassemble the tasks split up by a business division into synchronous business processes. Processes are sets of end-to-end activities in an organization that create value for a customer. Hence, it makes sense for an organizational structure to reinforce them instead of breaking them up. By refocusing businesses on entire processes rather than individual tasks, BPR and Process Centering attempts to radically change the traditional business structure. According to Michael Hammer and his "disciples" this is not just a fad, it is the way of the future.In my opinion, businesses need not fully "˜process center' their companies in the way that Hammer suggests but his underlying concept of looking at a business through a "˜process lens' is valid. For too long businesses have looked to fix individual tasks when the problem lay with the processes. This was too narrow a view and is more likely to be the outdated problem solver/quality improver. Business Process Reengineering refocuses businesses on their processes and so aids managers in coping with current inefficiencies. Many companies have used BPR to process center their businesses including many major American corporations such as Texas Instruments. Process Centering is slowly integrating itself into society and is a thing of the "˜future' not the past.Process Centering involves monitoring external factors to the company such as new technologies etc, as well as internal factors such as worker training etc. By monitoring all factors relevant to a company, the company is able to predict changes and adapt in time. This process of monitoring the environment and constantly adapting ensures that BPR and its resulting Process Centering will never go past their use-by-date.Total Quality Management is another business process improvement technique that is implemented in businesses...
