What are Anxiety Disorders?
A cover term for a variety of mental disorders in which severe anxiety is a salient symptom. Anxiety disorders are the most common of emotional disorders and affect more than 25 million Americans. Many forms and symptoms may include:
• Overwhelming feelings of panic and fear
• Uncontrollable obsessive thoughts
• Painful, intrusive memories
• Recurring nightmares
• Physical symptoms such as feeling sick to your stomach, “butterflies” in your stomach, heart pounding, startling easily, and muscle tension

People with PTSD often have lasting and frightening thoughts and memories of the event and tend to be emotionally numb.
Social anxiety disorder
Also called social phobia, social anxiety disorder involves overwhelming worry and self-consciousness about everyday social situations. The worry often centers on a fear of being judged by others, or behaving in a way that might cause embarrassment or lead to ridicule.
Generalized anxiety disorder
This disorder involves excessive, unrealistic worry and tension, even if there is little or nothing to provoke the anxiety.
What Are the Symptoms of an Anxiety Disorder?
Symptoms vary depending on the type of anxiety disorder, but general symptoms include:
• Feelings of panic, fear, and uneasiness
• Uncontrollable, obsessive thoughts
• Repeated thoughts or flashbacks of traumatic experiences
• Ritualistic behaviors, such as repeated hand washing
• Problems sleeping
• Cold or sweaty hands and/or feet
• Shortness of breath
• An inability to be still and calm
• Dry mouth
• Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
• Muscle tension
Causes of Anxiety Disorder
Studies have shown that anxiety disorders are most likely caused by environmental factors, medical factors, genetics, brain chemistry, substance abuse or a combinations of these . Most people with these disorders are biologically vulnerable to stress due to the responses to the outside forces . People always make themselves anxious with “ negative self-talk ” which is a habit of telling oneself the worst will happen .
It is believed that the environment plays a triggering role in anxiety disorders and may cause anxiety disorders by themselves . Environment doesn’t include things that are genetic but the experiences you have, places you go and the things you were taught . Factors that are known to cause different types of anxiety include :
Traumatic events like abuse, victimization or the death of a loved ones
Personal relationship, marriage, friendship and divorce stress
Work and school stress
Finances and money stress
Natural disasters stress
Lack of oxygen in high altitude areas
A change in environment like a new job or a new home
Anxiety is associated with medical factors such as anemia, asthma, infections and several heart conditions . The stress from a serious medical illness can heightened the anxiety and fear symptoms .
