Analysis of Target’s 2010 Annual Report

In 1902 Target was incorporated in Minneapolis Minnesota (page2). Their business is divided into two segments, credit card and retail (page2). The retail segment would consist of internet sales and merchandising. While the credit card segment supplies credit cards to customers via Target Visa and the Target Card.
Like most companies, Target does not operate on a calendar year. They operate on a fiscal year. The date used is determined by “Saturday nearest January 31.” For the year 2010, the fiscal year end date was January 29, 2011. Target is a wide-ranging merchandising store (page2) broken down into five categories, household essentials, hardlines, apparel and accessories, home furnishing and décor and food and pet supplies (page3). Household essentials would have products from the pharmacy, baby needs, paper products, health and beauty supplies and the pharmacy. Hardlines consist of electronics, software, periodicals, sporting goods and toys. Apparel and accessories would be clothes for the family including personal wear, shoes and jewelry. Home furnishing and décor would have products that are seasonal, supplies for all rooms of the house and kitchen and automotive supplies. Food and pet supplies would consist of items normally seen in a grocery store (meats, dairy, and frozen food and pantry items). They also offer national brand name products like Converse®, Cherokee®, Shabby Chic®, Mossimo®, Fieldcrest® and Eddie Bauer®. Besides offer nationally know brand names Target has brands that are owned or exclusive to Target for example Archer Farms®, Simply Balanced®, Circo®, Merona® Target Home™, Market Pantry™ and Room Essentials® to name a few.
Like most discount merchandising business (page4) Target has competitors like Costco, CVS, Shop Rite and BJ’s to name a few. But unlike most companies Target has paid dividend every year since 1967. For the fiscal year 2010 the dividends paid were $609 million which works out to be .92 cents per share (page 21, 35, 36). It had a gross margin rate in 2010 of 30.5% (page17) and earnings per share of $4.03 (page 33, 39). From the chart below you can see that Target has remained completive but is not leading the pack when compared to its peer group.
