Militarism: the belief in the power of strong armies/navies to decide issues
- Germany began to build up their armies
- European nations became alarmed by others military power
- Each country tried to build larger/more powerful war machines; new technology
Alliance System: Alliances- groups formed in Europe to support each other in attack
- War between two nations would involve more than one country
- Triple Entente- Russia, Britain, France
- Triple Alliance- Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy
Nationalism: a feeling of deep loyalty to one’s own land

This also assisted in Canada’s independence.
Anyone who had not yet gained Canadian citizenship and who was a former citizen of a country at war with Canada.
War Measures Act
Giving the soldiers control of all citizen’s right. When used, it was a declaration of war.
Used to trick the citizen’s into doing what the government wanted them to do. Ex. Buying in victory bonds because the government was out of money.
Taking a man of the age of 18 to war against his will. Referred to as Zombies because they are going to die against their will.
Nurse, working in factories, giving them limited voting right. Manitoba was the first to give women right to vote.
Becomes the first communist country in the world. This leads to other countries following them and become communists. Happened in 1917.
Treaty of Versailles
Made Germany pay back for all the damage it caused around the world. They were not allowed to have an army anymore. This was a cause that led to WW2.
Simply the ban of all alcohol. No one was allowed to sell or be caught drinking alcohol. Many people became rich off of smuggling rum and selling.
Rebellious women in the 1920’s. This was the start of the women revolution. Women started to change and started to drink and smoke, wear new clothes, etc.
Persons Case/ Alberta Five
The persons case was to allow women to senate. This gave them more power, more freedom, and ability to vote. A group of women that started from Alberta that fought hard for women’s rights. Leader of the group was Emily Murphy.
King Byng Affair
1925 King forms a collation with the progressive party. King demands an election but Lord Byng refuses. King says that Britain was interfering with the Canadian Government.
Group of Seven
A famous art group that made painting about nature. They gave Canadian’s pride by saying the group of seven were all Canadians.
Stock Market Crash
October 29, 1929 was known as the infamous black Tuesday. This was the day that the stock market collapsed. People rushed to get their stocks converted to cash but all stock values decreased.
Causes of the Great Depression
Stock Market Crash: One of the causes was the stock market crash. This made the economy weak so many people were unemployed. As many people were unemployed they could not feed their families making the great depression.
Drought: Drought hit prairies, so they could not harvest crops. After years of drought, good weather returned to prairies; farmers began to harvest. No food could be sent to markets so all the prices on food had to be raised.
Buying Credit: If you wanted to buy something but couldn’t afford it, then you could go with buying credit. You would pay a set amount of money every month or week until you could pay it off. This never worked because no one ever paid back their credit.
