Affirmative action is defined as compensatory treatment for previously disadvantaged groups. One keyword we must understand to get a better feeling of what affirmative action really is would be compensatory. Defined in the dictionary compensatory is of payment, intended to recompense someone who has experienced loss, suffering, or injury. We must also understand discrimination; discrimination is the intentional exclusion of a person or a group of people because of their race or culture. Affirmative action was first introduced in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy. The first issue some have with affirmative action is education, especially for the admission process in educational institutions. Affirmative action in the United States influence the acceptance rates of college applicants based on race. In Bakke v. Regents of the University of California, Allan Bakke’s application for Medical School at University of California at Davis was rejected although his academic scores were higher than most who were admitted.
The University of Texas school of Law denied Hopwood and three white students of admission even though they were better qualified than many of the candidates who were minority and got admitted. A federal lawsuit was filed by Hopwood against the University. The fifth circuit court of appeals issued that the University is no longer allowed to use race as a factor in admitting applicants.it has been declared unconstitutional to admit students into universities based on race but unfortunately some schools still do this and this is one of the main reasons for this controversy. It is clear that there is some unfairness with using race as admitting applicants and that is why some think it is a form of reverse discrimination. Race should not be a Factor in accepting someone into a school if you have the grades and the knowledge to be accepted to the school of your choice then there should be no argument with that. If someone no matter their race is deserving of a job they should never be overqualified.
Some believe that affirmative action is a disguise for racial discrimination. Affirmative action does not establish what it is supposed to represent. Affirmative is supposed to show equality among classes and races. The government should not be picking who should win or lose through race or gender. Some people think Affirmative action is a perfect example of racial discrimination. Affirmative action is important and relevant because it is the only way to assure that millions of the minority will get the chance to go to some of the best schools in the country and it would be a tragedy if it were eliminated. Affirmative action is a good idea but it really needs to be improved by targeting those who need help.
There are more benefits than drawbacks; affirmative action redirects jobs to those who need them. Minority workers in “previously inaccessible” positions will be more responsive to the needs of minorities and serve as mentors”.
