Differences in competencies between nurses prepared at the associate degree level versus the baccalaureate degree level in nursing.
Pioneers in nursing has been in debate for bringing up the standards in nursing. In the olden times the nursing was started as handing over a tradition to the next generation by word of the mouth. Then it became a formal training at the hospital ( hospital based) As years went by and more people are attracted to nursing profession, and the education. As nurses became plenty the leaders looked in to specializing and making nurses the expert in a specified field of their interest. Actually they learned most of the material on their own. They lacked the theory and science behind the nursing as a profession. Their main focus was on learning clinical skills and task oriented. This allows the individual to graduate in two years and earning a salary much earlier. This was less expensive and perhaps the students earned a stipend from the hospital during their education period.
Associate Degree Nursing.
This program was more or less same as Diploma nursing. Associate degree was given in nursing schools away from the hospital setting. They have contacts with the patients only during clinical period. This program is also two year, skill/ task oriented. This was also a most popular degree being it was shorter, more concise and less expensive to become a registered nurse.
Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing ( BSN):BSN program is a four year degree program and is conducted in universities. The students are taught to do research The nursing curriculum has theory, research, humanities, science and expanded course work and are taught evidenced based practices. They provide an holistic approach of the patients. By learning theory and science the students are able to do critical thinking and reasoning. The BSN degree also serves as a bridge to those who want to continue their education at graduate level.
