The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is a nonprofit and independent organization that aids in the assistance of the government to make health decisions. IOM is made up of studies, forums and committees working together to improve the health of people. The IMO would like the goal for a nurse to have a BSN or higher degree to 80 percent by 2020.
President Obama introduced the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in 2010.This was put into place to provide better affordable health care options to the public. The nursing profession must overcome obstacles such as resistance within the nursing and medical communities and elaborating and expanding on the nursing scope of practice. With this act come opportunities to expand and develop new roles. The IOM states” Nurses have the opportunity to play a central role in transforming the health care system to create a more accessible, high quality, and value-driven environment for patients.(IOM 2010 p.85).” The nursing profession and practice must improve with quality of care due to increasing illness seen in primary care, chronic illness, and transitional care.
“To be effective in re-conceptualized roles and to be seen and accepted as leaders, nurses must see policy as something they can shape and develop rather than something that happens to them, whether at the local organizational level or the national level (IOM,2010 p.222).” Nurses play a large role in the health care system, not only just in patient care, but also other areas as well, such as; nurse educators, legal consultants and nurse practitioners. Nurses are also part of organizations such as the ANA to help facilitate the standards of practice. With the ever evolving changes in the health care system, nurses are on the front line to communicate with these organizations about standards of practice, problems arising, and evidence based practice solutions. Therefore, these organizations can take this to state or national level to help develop new standards in able to improve the patient quality of care. Another role that is vital to the nursing community is the leadership role. “ In nursing, leadership is studied as a way of increasing the skills and abilities needed to facilitate clinical outcomes while working with people across a variety of situations and to increase understanding and control of the professional work setting (Huber p.1).” Having effective leadership leads to quality nurses performing quality care, being a consistent influence during the constant changes in the medical field, and helps to...
