There has been discrimination in our society for centuries and as a result many with disabilities or those of color were passed over for employment and not given a fair opportunity due to physical appearance. Fortunately there was the executive order to pass affirmative action which guaranteed the hiring of those of color. Also it again limits the number of applicants that employers have to hire and leaves out some who are qualified. There can not be a “quick fix” to any discrimination problems but fair hiring and treatment of the disabled and those of color need to be addressed.
Affirmative Action was set up around the Civil rights Movement of the sixties and was passed by Congress in the John F. Kennedy era. It was set up to provide equal opportunity in education and hiring practices among minorities. Affirmative Action helps with women as well and is to assure that employers are bringing in the most qualified individuals despite their gender, religion, sexual preference or ethnic background. Some critics feel that minorities that are under qualified are taking away jobs from qualified Caucasians but this is just political fodder. Employers are not going to hire some one who can not do the job just to “meet a quota” as some speculate. The problem with this law is that some employers will only hire the minimum number of minorities or other special population and leave out those who seem to be more than qualified just because of their personal agendas or prejudices.
